Why I Prioritize Fitness as a Camera Operator

Being a camera operator in the bustling world of video production requires more than just technical skills and creativity. It also demands physical fitness and mental stamina. Join me as I delve into why fitness is crucial for camera operators and share insights from my workout plan tailored for photographers, videographers, camera operators, grips, gaffers, etc...

The Physical and Mental Demands of Being Behind the Lens

Working behind the camera entails long days of carrying equipment around and for some; a lot of moving shots that require steadiness and stamina. Fitness plays a pivotal role in combating the physical strain while also boosting mental acuity and creativity.

Why Fitness is Vital for Camera Operators:

  • Endurance : Long shoots can be physically taxing. But also, long SHOTS can be physically taxing. Working on your endurance through fitness helps you stay energized and productive throughout the day without compromising on the quality of your work.

  • Flexibility : Maneuvering around sets and securing that ideal angle often requires contorting your body. Flexibility gained from specific workouts enhances your range of motion and reduces the risk of strain or injury. We've all had to get into those weird positions for the shot.

  • Mental Clarity : Exercise releases endorphins, which are essential for maintaining mental clarity and focus. In the fast-paced environment of filmmaking, a sharp mind is your greatest asset. Regularly going to the gym WILL improve your mental game as well.

  • Stress Relief : We all know the film/video industry can be high-pressure. Fitness acts as a natural stress reliever, allowing you to approach challenges with a clear and level head.

  • Injury Prevention: Camera operators are prone to repetitive strain injuries and other physical ailments due to the nature of their work. A fitness program that includes strength training, flexibility exercises, and proper ergonomics can help prevent these injuries, ensuring a longer and healthier career.

My Workout Plan for Camera Operators

A few years back I had a shoot that would be 5 12 hour days with a lot of heavy gimbal movements, stand up interviews, walking and talking, hiking, biking, boating, etc... I was already going to the gym, but I knew I was going to have to train more specifically for this shoot, and I did. It went great, and I didn't feel nearly as worn out as I normally do after a long shoot. Since then, I've continued to follow the fitness plan I created for myself, modifying it along the way.

Recently, I created a plan, using those same workouts, for everyone to try. I named it "Strong and Steady - Steadier shots in 7 weeks" because in this industry, strong and steady wins the race. Anyone who works on set will benefit from this plan.

What makes this plan unique:

This affordable fitness plan for camera operators is unique because it is specifically tailored to meet the physical and mental demands of our profession. Here are some key features that set it apart:

  • The exercises : The exercises are specifically designed to enhance the strength, endurance, and flexibility needed for long hours of filming and handling equipment. To put it simply; the plan not only includes exercises will help your general strength, but includes exercises that match the movements that you do on set, but using weights that are heavier than your rig. This way, when you get on set and have to hold a long shot with your rig, it won't feel heavy.

  • The versatility : The plan is perfect for both beginners and experienced gym goers. The first few pages go over simple gym etiquette, terms you'll need to know, how to do the different exercises, and why certain movements are important.

  • The layout : As mentioned above the plan goes over a lot of what you need to know before going to the gym. Aside from that, I specifically have the plan laid out for you so that for 7 weeks, you have your exact plan written out for each and every day. I tell you when to change the weight, when to lower your reps, when to add movement, etc. I provide your split for you, so you don't have to come up with what to do on which day or how to break it up. There are many different exercises grouped together in a very specific way so that you aren't doing random workouts and you're ensuring that you're getting stronger in certain areas.

  • Track your progress : Tracking your progress is essential in getting stronger. The plan provides space to track each exercise, each day. This way when the plan tells you to go higher in weight, you can see what weight you did the week before and know how much to increase by. This will also give you satisfaction in knowing that you're getting stronger.

  • Focus on mobility : The plan includes special warmup and cool down routines to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injuries, which is crucial for camera operators who often work in challenging positions.

Why 7 weeks?

We should only be following the same plan for 6-8 weeks, but I personally get bored after doing the same thing for 6 weeks. Week 7 is dedicated to maxing out so know where we're really at strength wise. This will help you in the future to know what you're capable of, and when phase 2 comes out soon, you'll need those numbers to know what weights you should be lifting.

After your 7 weeks are over, you'll either feel confident enough to keep going on your own, or you can come to me for more help. At the end of the program, I let everyone know to reach out if they want additional help. Phase 2 will also be coming soon, so you'll have the option to extend the program at a very discounted rate, switching things up and not giving up on all the progress you made during phase 1.

Embrace Fitness, Elevate Your Craft

In conclusion, prioritizing fitness isn't just about sculpting your physique—it's about equipping yourself to thrive in the dynamic realm of filmmaking. By incorporating a consistent workout plan tailored to the unique needs of camera operators, you not only enhance your physical capabilities but also foster mental resilience and creative prowess essential for delivering cinematic masterpieces. Try it for yourself and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
